The Godfather of Record Covers
Hard to believe that one man is largely responsible for the genre we call ‘Album Cover Art’ – that man is Alex Steinweiss. Steinweiss was the first Art Director for Columbia Records, who, in 1939, introduced the concept of artwork on all of the company’s record sleeves to aid sales. Previously, nearly all records were sold in plain packaging.
In a career spanning 5 decades and expanding well beyond Columbia Records, Steinweiss personally created over 2500 sleeve designs in his distinctive style, moving from typography and illustration to include photography and collage. More info and covers here and also here.
